Enhancing Students’ Overall Well-Being
In recent years, mental well-being has been at the forefront of higher education conversations, and for good reason. In a recent Student Voice survey, students shared that stress is negatively affecting their mental health and ability to perform well academically. Additionally, in a TimelyMD survey top stressors in a student’s life include their own mental health conditions, personal finances and academics, and 71% of students struggle with stress, anxiety and depression.
Even with stress and anxiety becoming more widespread across college campuses, 58% of students who’ve experienced chronic stress during college haven’t accessed their college or university’s mental health resources. Being in a constant state of stress without professional help can deteriorate someone’s mental health and negatively affect their overall well-being. |
|
For example, if students are letting their mental health issues go unchecked it can have an adverse impact on their physical health. According to Very Well, an individual’s mental and physical health are connected, and an improvement or decline in one can lead to an improvement or decline in the other. A decline in one’s mental health can snowball into unhealthy physical behaviors like lack of exercise, poor diet and sleep deprivation. |
